Next I removed the ink cartridges and the carriage. I reckon the 'A' refers to what you'd find at the back of a Canon technicians bum.
I just pushed it toward the back of the printer and cleaned underneath it....LOTS of ink. An error occurred in the AP motor during purging operation. I had this error and followed the instructions posted to clear it.

Like others above, my printer head was not moving on startup like it should have. An error occurred in the AP motor during purging operation. After disassembling the printer, I found what was apparently the return spring and the broken plastic clip that it used to attach to.
