Damon, I had the same problem with the mail accounts not syncing to iphone and your fix worked first time. This quick and easy fix works well for the vast majority of users: Open iTunes, disable mail (or whatever the failed sync type is) syncing, apply, close iTunes. I was experiencing this same error and reset my sync history. I unchecked all but my main account. Then Add Account > Other (assuming none of the presets apply), then Add Mail Account. Don't get me wrong - syncing is pretty reliable on the whole, and whenever an error does occur, a resync or reconnect usually sorts it out.

Under Mail Accounts, I had four different accounts. Or even re-installing your OS (archive should suffice).
